design wall monday

This is perfect timing since i'm in need of a little advice. Can you tell the difference in the layouts? Do you like one better than the others? I'm not partial to any particular layout so i'm hoping for some suggestions. Next bit of advice I need is for the borders. There are only 12 of the 48 blocks up on the design wall but I need to decide on borders. I was thinking skinny green or yellow then wide border of the inspiration print-black background with M&M characters on it. What do you think? Green or Yellow? Or do you have a better idea?

You don't know me, and my tastes are often different from the popular, but since you asked: I like the second layout!

I'm typing this at 3:30am so forgive me if I ramble or overanalyze a bit...

I do see differences in the three layouts. I am seeing the basic block that resembles three squares lined up. Since we see a full square in the corner, that is dominant and creates movement for the eye to follow. I also see two colorways - one hot with yellow and red and the other is cool with blue and green.

Since the border has the M & M characters on it, I am assuming that there is a randomness in that material.

So, the third layout is very organized. All of the blocks are moving in one direction. So, how is that going to interact with a border that may or may not have order in that? Do you line up your M&Ms in a row, before you eat them???

The second layout, there is still an order (yellows in one direction and the greens in the other). My eye sees a pattern, but then I lose it. It is all mixed up, so it resembles more of a bowl of candy, if that makes sense.

The first layout has the most depth, due to the rotation. I see arrows pointing out (the corner four blocks) and then arrows pointing in. The red/blue blocks are on top and then they are on the bottom. Very organized and probably more obvious with the full layout of 48 blocks. So, how would this look with the wide border fabric.

Since there are three different secondary patterns, you may need to lay all the blocks out to see if you like what emerges. I would make sure that you don't see the white in between the blocks, since that can impact your perception.

Borders? Consider a thin black and then the strips of green and yellow. What color is the background of the character fabric since that may affect the look. And I am not sure of the size of the characters related to the size of these blocks. Will one overshadow the other. You may also want just have the character fabric as a backing.

This probably adds to the confusion, but it was an interesting morning mind exercise!.

Thanks!

This is a nice bright quilt. I like the second layout best. The first one is very "3-D", but I don't like the fact that the center square is the one that is "lowest". And I'm with the previous poster, who said #3 is too organized.

Yellow is the colour that I thought of for a narrow border, even before I read your last paragraph. But I can't visualize if that is enough (1 yellow strip and then a wide border). I'd be tempted to find a way to work in all 4 colours, but I haven't seen the inspiration fabric, so this might not make sense. I'm thinking small yellow, wide inspiration, a row of red/yellow/green/blue squares, slightly wider than the first border, and a final border of inspiration fabric.

Try turning all the points of the yellow and green to the inside of the set of 4 blocks. Sort of like setting 2 but turn all the blocks.

I like the top one better...seems more organized.
I decide on borders simply by what fabric I have left!
